Verdana is a sans-serif typeface designed by Matthew Carter in 1996 for Microsoft. The design features a large x-height, wide proportions, loose spacing and a bold weight that is unusually thick. These characteristics aid in its readability on low resolution screens but can come across as rather crude in print or on high resolution displays. Verdana was extremely popular on the web as a default system font in the early-to-mid 2000s but has since fallen out of favor—I didn’t feature a site using it on Typewolf until three and a half years in (and in this case, it was used in an ironic or brutalist manner).
